American Airlines Adjusts Strategy Amid Lower 2025 Profit Forecast

By | February 5, 2025

American Airlines faces a challenging financial outlook for 2025, as its profit forecast falls short of market expectations. The airline, which has been realigning its business model since 2023, is now adjusting its approach following weaker-than-anticipated sales and a competitive disadvantage. The shift comes after significant restructuring efforts, including renegotiations with corporate travel agencies and key clients, which have impacted revenue performance and brand perception.

Financial Projections Below Market Estimates

American Airlines has announced an adjusted earnings per share (EPS) projection for 2025 ranging between $1.70 and $2.70, notably below analysts’ expectations of $2.42, based on data from LSEG. The company also warns of a larger-than-expected loss for the first quarter, contrasting with the more optimistic forecasts from competitors Delta Air Lines and United Airlines, which continue to benefit from robust pricing trends and strong seasonal demand.

For the current quarter, American Airlines anticipates an adjusted loss per share between $0.20 and $0.40, significantly exceeding the anticipated $0.04 per share loss that analysts had predicted.

Leadership’s Response to Market Pressures

CEO Robert Isom reaffirmed the company’s commitment to restructuring, stating that American Airlines is working toward building a more efficient and resilient airline. This reassessment follows a period of turbulence resulting from its recent strategic decisions, which, while intended to optimize long-term performance, have led to short-term financial strain.

Positive 2024 Earnings Amid Pricing Gains

Despite these setbacks, the airline reported an annual adjusted EPS of $0.86, surpassing the expected $0.64 per share, largely due to pricing improvements. This highlights some resilience in its pricing power, even as operational challenges persist.
